An Inconvenient Truth

Teoh Beng Hock was 30 years old, one year elder than me.

He was supposed to get married today.

However, he was taken in by the Malaysian Anti Corruption’s Commission (MACC) to aid investigation. And he fell to his death next to the MACC office yesterday.

He left behind his devastated fiancée and family members.

The MACC director of investigations Datuk Mohd Shukri said that Teoh was a witness but not a suspect. But he was taken in for questioning from 5PM to 3.45AM the next day. To quote Elizabeth Wong, even the police are not authorized to interrogate suspects after 6PM. And what is more, Teo was, in Shukri’s own word, a witness and not a suspect. Who do MACC officers think they are?

Public opinion has viewed that the MACC is one of the pawns in the series of political persecution of the Pakatan Rakyat.

Now his death was shrouded with much suspicion. He has got a bright future. He has so much to contribute to the society.

His death sends chills down my spine. What has become of Malaysia? Is this a mere accident? A suicide attempt? Or a cold-blooded murder?

There are many more alleged tortured-to-death cases both in police custody and in prison, reported and unreported. And now at MACC. Why? Have all these people no right to live? All Malaysians want to know, and deserve to know. But we will never come to know the real truth for truth can now be fabricated: inconvenience can be made convenient; lies can be twisted to become truths.

His death is not the first; neither will his be the last… So who is next?

  1. It can be any innocent person in Malaysia as long as the wrong people who are in power.

  2. Yeah, that means it can be you or me.

And that is exactly what most contended Malaysians do not see. As long as the victim is not related to me, the issue does not affect me, that is none of my business, and I could not care less.
